Lessons from Coaching: Why the Little Things Count
Many of you may not know this, but I began my time at LCCS coaching soccer and basketball in 2006 at what was then Living Word Academy. I love coaching. It has been a huge part of my discipleship journey, and I've found it to be one of my favorite avenues to live life with students and teach them about the Lord. This past week in chapel I was able to do a little coaching and share with our middle & upper school students one of the core values I believe leads to a great team. This value also plays a big role in our lives as we seek to ABIDE in Jesus.
“Little Things Matter.” I say this phrase extensively throughout a basketball season. The only thing I think I say more is “Love Each Other.” I believe these are the two most important ingredients to a successful team. In our lives, the little things have the opportunity to make a huge impact either positively or negatively. The little things we do on a daily basis often go unnoticed in life, but over time these little habits compound and add up. As we cultivate these habits, they help us develop virtuous character in our lives, and at the end of the day, the little habits of Abiding in Jesus lead to a lasting reward if we give laws to Him.
We are reminded throughout scripture to persevere in the little things because they matter. Daily time in God's Word, prayer, silence, fellowship, and community all help shape our worldview into one that honors the Lord. As I think about the little things in life that can throw challenges my way, I often come back to Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
This week let's pray over the little things. How can God use them in our lives to draw us closer to Him as we seek to Abide in Him? How can He use them to disciple our children in truth? I want to challenge you to commit to one little thing this week that you think will have an eternal impact on you and your family.
Gracefully,
Nate
